Hebrews 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
One reaction to the first part of this verse might be to wonder who actually cares about pleasing God, anyways. Who worries about that? Our worries are wrapped up in our day to day lives, and many times the fear of death that should drive us all to our knees, all too often just drives us to the doctor’s office. Mankind has made a habit of doing without the need of God. He is sidelined, and ignored.
J B Phillips translated this same verse in this way:
And without faith it is impossible to please him. The man who approaches God must have faith in two things, first that God exists and secondly that it is worth a man’s while to try to find God.
Pleasing God is what it’s all about.
Another verse that comes to mind is this,
Luke 11:27 As he said these things, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts at which you nursed!” 28 But he said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”
Jesus placed himself, and his mother, and all of us into that same group. Jesus heard the word of God and obeyed. So did his mother, and so can we. To be truly blessed.
What can I do for God? How can I please him? Listening, constant obedience from that first little step to the last… that’s what.
